IELTS

For the first time, every single applicant from overseas will have to take and pass an International English Language test IELTS before they can even apply to go on the ONP.

The NMC has raised the standard for this test. It will be The International English Language Test set by the British Council. While the average score remains at 6.5, the standard is the academic standard rather than the general standard currently used. This equates with the standard required for a degree level course in the UK.

The NMC has approved a standard requiring successful achievement of the International English Language Testing System (IELT S) with an overall score of 6.5 (not less than 5.5 in Listening and reading and not less than 6 in writing and speaking). The required standard is for the academic version of the test.

From September 2005 all applicants for nursing registration will be required to undertake an IELTS test. Applicants who have been given an assessment prior to this, to undertake an IELTS test and a period of supervised practice must pass the IELTS before commencing a supervised placement.

If an applicant who has been requested to undertake a period of supervised practice and has not completed this by the end of August 2006 or decides to enroll on an ONP before this date they will be required to pass an IELTS test as an entry requirement to the programme.
