UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND

Sunderland has been an important centre for education since 674 AD, when Benedict Biscop built St Peter’s Church and monastery. St Peter’s Church was the site of the greatest scriptorium north of the Alps, and has been described as the Oxford of its day. The oldest existing Latin version of the Bible - the Codex Amiantinus - was written at St Peter's Church, close to the University’s £9m state-of-the-art Media Centre, which was launched in 2004.

Sunderland has an international outlook and students from across the globe choose to study there - either on campus or on their accredited programmes in partner institutions. It has been named the top university in England for providing the best student experience. In the latest Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review – the organisation that checks academic standards – Sunderland was awarded the highest possible ratings for the quality of its courses. The same rating was given to its teaching, learning environment and student support as part of a full QAA audit.

The school encompasses a wide range of subject disciplines including traditional science subjects, health related sciences, nursing and healthcare, the environment, sports sciences, sports studies, and professional development programmes for both public and private sector employees.

Sunderland’s nursing programmes offers a comprehensive range of study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level for the post registered nurse. Their innovative, multidisciplinary, contemporary programmes are taught in modern, excellent teaching facilities in the School of Health, Natural and Social Sciences. It addresses the current political health care agenda ensuring 'fit for purpose, fit for practice practitioners'.
